Who: Student-Athletes of Color from IWLCA Member Institutions
Women’s lacrosse graduates from the collegiate classes of 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022 and eligible to apply. This first symposium will include a limited number participants to ensure an engaging, interactive experience.
What: Future Leaders of the Game: IWLCA Students of Color Coaching Symposium
This virtual symposium is designed to empower and encourage student-athletes to consider coaching girl’s and women’s lacrosse as a possible career choice. The symposium will be facilitated by a diverse group of coaches and administrators to expose lacrosse student-athletes of color to the profession of coaching and provide them with the tools, mentors, and career advancement connections to diversify the pool of coaches in our sport.
When: January 4-5, 2021
Sessions will be conducted virtually between the hours of 11:00 am and 9:00 pm ET.
Why: To improve access to the profession for women from underrepresented backgrounds
Women’s Lacrosse has one of the highest percentages of female coaches (86%) in all of collegiate sport. However, the number of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color coaching women’s lacrosse at NCAA institutions is extremely low. In 2019, 2.3% of head coaches identified as Black and 5% of head coaches identified as Indigenous or People of Color. The numbers for assistant coaches follow a similar trend: 2.6% of assistant coaches identified as Black and 5.1% of assistant coaches identified as Indigenous or People of Color. More BIPOC student-athletes are playing lacrosse now than ever before (16% BIPOC/84% white), which presents us with a unique opportunity to facilitate their entry into our profession.
How: Apply online by December 11, 2020
The symposium will be offered at no-cost to participants, and participants will be offered ongoing networking opportunities with IWLCA member coaches in the spring as they navigate their job searches. Selected participants will be notified by December 18, 2020 and will need to confirm their attendance by December 23, 2020.
