The IWLCA STX Capital Cup Tournament kicked off on Friday in Virginia, with games taking place at the River City Sports Complex and the Clover Hill Athletic Complex. Almost 4,000 athletes competing in the 2019, 2020, 2021 and Open divisions played 443 games during the three-day event that concluded Sunday. The Summer Debut, which took place on Friday and Saturday, featured players from the class of 2022 competing in their first IWLCA event.

This year's event was a "championship format," which saw teams compete in pool play followed by additional games for consolation/playoff competition. “The new championship format at the IWLCA Capital Cup increased the intensity and excitement in each game," according to Melissa Lehman, associate head coach at the University of Pennsylvania. "From a recruiting standpoint, I was able to see who wanted the ball when the game was on the line, who was willing to step up and make a big play for their team, and who was out there competing until the final whistle. I haven’t had that much fun watching from the sideline in a while!"

Over 400 coaches from more than 250 NCAA Division I, II, III, and NAIA institutions attended the event to evaluate prospective student-athletes. The event featured three international teams, as the U-19 training squads from Canada, England, and New Zealand played in the Open division to gain experience in advance of next summer's FIL U-19 World Cup.

The IWLCA STX Capital Cup is the final summer event in the IWLCA Recruiting Tournament Series. The next tournament will be the Brine President's Cup presented by New Balance. It will be held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex and Lake Myrtle Sports Park from November 16-18, 2018 in Orlando, FL. The Fall Debut Tournament will be held in conjunction with the President's Cup on November 17-18, and will take place at Championsgate Sports Complex in Orlando.
