Reporting to and under the direction of the Director of Athletics, this part-time position (August - May) is responsible for the management and administration of all aspects of the University's Women Lacrosse program in adherence to the policies, rules and regulations of the University, National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA ) and Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC ).

 

Head Women's Lacrosse Coach (Part Time)

Representative Duties:

  • Develops Lacrosse skills, strategies and philosophy. E
  • Promotes student-athlete academic achievement/success, welfare and provides appropriate mentoring to student-athletes; effectively communicates with student-athletes and assistant coach(es). E
  • Demonstrates competitive success both in the University, SCIAC and NCAA level and promotes positive sportsmanship. E
  • Identifies prospective student-athletes who are able to qualify for admission to the University; effectively communicates with prospective student-athletes; effectively communicates and coordinates recruitment efforts with University’s Office of Admissions. E
  • Maintains student athlete squad numbers at or above University recommended threshold; retains student-athletes in the University; retains the student-athletes on the team at an acceptable retention rate. E
  • Develops annual budget plan in accordance with Department guidelines; effectively manages the fiscal resources of the program; manage budget expenditures according to the budget plan each year. E
  • Operates within all University, SCIAC and NCAA Division III guidelines; oversees, manages and recruits for the operation of junior varsity team (if applicable). E
  • Prepares and provides schedules to facilities scheduler and department for practice and competitions within established guidelines; maintains inventory of equipment, uniforms and supplies and purchases, within program resources, replacements as needed; coordinate all team travel and transportation needs according to established policies and procedures; effectively communicates within the Department and with University community on matters pertaining to program. E
  • Identifies, hires, trains and evaluates assistant coach(es), including volunteers and graduate assistances; ensures that assistant coach(es)/volunteer(s) adhere to University, SCIAC and NCAA Division III policies, procedures and rules. E
  • Actively work to secure Victory Club membership to generate additional funds as needed for program aspirations and budget augmentation; effectively communicates with all constituencies, including Department staff, other campus departments, alumni, parents and prospective student-athletes. E
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned.

Knowledge Of:

  • University, NCAA and SCIAC rules and regulations
  • Rules and strategies related to intercollegiate Lacrosse
  • Compliance issues concerning the administration of intercollegiate athletics.
  • Coaching theory, techniques, and strategies; technical and tactical coaching of Lacrosse
  • Recruitment techniques and team management of an intercollegiate athletics program
  • Effective promotion of good sportsmanship, academic excellence, positive attitudes and character
  • The care and prevention of athletic injuries, basic sports injury first aid and emergency procedures
  • Principles of sports leadership and training
  • Effective planning and organizational methods
  • Basic liability and risk management issues

Ability To:

  • Design and implement recruitment plan for high school and college student-athletes; scout and recruit quality student-athletes
  • Objectively evaluative skills in the areas of physical education and mental development related to Lacrosse
  • Work cooperatively with faculty, staff, student and constituent groups outside the University to support the continued success and development of the Lacrosse
  • Effectively communicate with student athletes, faculty, staff and the community in oral and written forms
  • Develop an organized program of training for Lacrosse to ensure success in intercollegiate Lacrosse competition
  • Provide leadership to student athletes to encourage both successful academic development and competitive performance
  • Demonstrated experience and expertise in appropriate team building activities
  • Possess the physical skills necessary to demonstrate Lacrosse techniques
  • Serve as a positive role model for student-athletes and work within a team-oriented philosophy
  • Maintain knowledge of and ensure compliance with University, NCAA, and SCIAC rules and regulations
  • Effectively teach fundamentals, skills, regulations, position details and strategies of Lacrosse during preparation and practice sessions
  • Provide a safe environment for students, athletes, visitors and other constituents
  • Work independently, prioritize, schedule and complete work
  • Maintain confidentiality of records and information; maintain files accurately, in paper and in software programs
  • Operate a personal computer and associated software, such as Outlook, Word, Excel, Datatel Recruiter, etc.
  • Operate a vehicle to travel and conduct work; work flexible hours with frequent evenings and weekends
  • Travel locally or nationally

Minimum Qualifications:

Any combination equivalent to: A Bachelor’s degree and three years of demonstrated success as a coach of a Club, High School, or Intercollegiate Lacrosse program.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree
  • Commitment to the values, standards and expectations of NCAA Division III athletics and a liberal arts university
  • A proven ability to recruit quality student-athletes, primarily from the Southern California area

Licenses and Other Requirements:

  • Valid California driver’s license.
  • Ability to obtain a Class B endorsed CDL License, insurance coverage (if driving own vehicle) or be insurable.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), AED (automated external defibrillator) and First Aid certifications within 90 days of employment.
  • Ability to work flexible hours with frequent evenings and weekends is required.
  • Travel is required.

Physical Abilities:

Ability to communicate (verbally and in writing) and hear to exchange information; ability to walk, run, jump, stretch, stand, sit, bend, twist, use hands for fine manipulation, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl; lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; climb stairs, ropes or ladders; specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus and peripheral vision; ability to demonstrate proper techniques and skills needed for athletic participation; ability to operate a vehicle to travel to various sites to conduct work; ability to maintain level of physical fitness to meet departmental standards.

Working Environment:

Working environment includes both indoors and outdoors; exposure to various weather conditions, including temperature extremes; Indoor work environment may not be air conditioned during hot weather; subject to vehicle operation to conduct work; travel is required; frequent weekend and evening hours is required.
