IWLCA Announces Kristina Quigley Scholarship

By IWLCA Admin, 09/12/16, 2:00PM EDT

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – IWLCA President Alicia Groveston announced the creation of a scholarship to honor Kristina Quigley, the former Seton Hill coach who was tragically killed in a bus accident in 2013 while traveling with her team. The bus driver and Quigley’s unborn son also did not survive. The Kristina Quigley Scholarship will provide funding to allow the family of one IWLCA member coach to accompany the coach to the IWLCA Annual Meetings. The 2016 IWLCA Annual Meeting is scheduled for November 16-18 at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.

"It is hard to believe that it has been over three years since Kristie left us too soon," Groveston said. "During that time the IWLCA, including her many colleagues, opposing coaches, and friends, brainstormed ways to honor her. Two things were extremely important to Kristie: her family and lacrosse. We could think of no better way to honor her, than to provide an opportunity to one of our member coaches to fulfill their professional commitment and also enjoy time away with their family."

To honor the passion, commitment and values of Kristina Quigley, the IWLCA has established a scholarship in her name. The purpose of this scholarship will be to subsidize a trip to the location of the IWLCA Annual Meeting for the recipient’s family. The time-intensive nature of the coaching profession is significant and family time is often sacrificed. The opportunity for a family to join a coach on this trip represents the very essence of Kristina Quigley.

At the time of her death, Quigley was the head coach at Seton Hill University. Prior to that she had coached at Erskine University and her alma mater, Duquesne University, where Michael Scerbo served as a mentor. Scerbo, now Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance at Duquesne University, said “Kristie was truly an inspiration to me, personally and professionally. She had a tremendous enthusiasm for coaching lacrosse and a deep love of her family. She gave her heart and soul to both every day.”

As a player and assistant at Duquesne, Kristina was known for her dedication, determination and creative approach to playing the sport. She looked at coaching as a vocation, using lacrosse as a way to make a positive impact on others and within her community. She is remembered at Seton Hill as a “dedicated teacher and mentor.”

Quigley’s teammate at Duquesne, Courtney Grove, is now the head coach at Seton Hill. “When I think of Kristie I just have to smile and give my kids a hug at the same time. She was someone that always brought a smile to my face and every time we talked it was not just about lacrosse but about her little boy Gavin; he was everything to her,” Grove said. “Her passion and love for lacrosse and her family was contagious and helped transform me into the coach and mother I am today. I will forever be grateful for what Kristie has brought to my life as a teammate, coach, mentor, and mother.”

The Kristina Quigley Scholarship selection committee will select the recipient on the basis of an essay response detailing the applicant’s “passion for coaching and family, and what it would mean to have your family with you at the IWLCA Annual Meeting.” The first recipient will be announced in mid-October of 2016.
