IWLCA Players of the Week – May 18, 2021

 

The IWLCA has chosen six NCAA student-athletes for the IWLCA Player of the Week awards for the week of May 10 – May 16, 2021. This weekly award recognizes the best offensive and defensive performances by players in Division I, II, and III each week during the regular season.

Division I

Co-Offensive Player of the Week

Taryn Ohlmiller – Stony Brook University

Ohlmiller tallied four goals and eight assists in the Seawolves 20-8 win over Rutgers on Sunday, tying the single-game NCAA Tournament record for assists. The graduate student also set program record for most points (12) and assists (8) in NCAA Tournament game and moved into second all-time for points in program history (408). Stony Brook also defeated Towson, 14-8, in the first round, led by Ohlmiller’s game-high seven points (four goals and three assists). Stony Brook will face top-seeded North Carolina in the NCAA Quarterfinals on Saturday.

Co-Offensive Player of the Week

Izzy Scane – Northwestern University

Scane led Northwestern to an NCAA second round victory over Denver (19-4) on Sunday, recording eight goals and three assists. The junior attacker now has a total of 89 goals on the season, breaking the previous program record for single season goals. Northwestern is the number two seed in the tournament and will host Duke in the NCAA Quarterfinals on Saturday.

Defensive Player of the Week

Sophia LeRose – Duke University

LeRose propelled Duke to victories over Mount St. Mary’s (19-3) and Maryland (13-12) in NCAA first and second round games last weekend. The junior goalkeeper made 18 saves while only giving up 14 goals and added seven ground balls. Duke will travel to Northwestern on Saturday for an NCAA Quarterfinal matchup.


Division II

Offensive Player of the Week

Emily Mitarotonda – East Stroudsburg University

Mitarotonda led the Warriors in points (11), draw controls (13), and caused turnovers (6) during NCAA first and second games, both against nationally ranked competition. The freshman midfielder put up four goals and two assists in an 18-10 victory over Seton hill, then followed that with three goals and two assists in the 13-9 win  against previously undefeated West Chester. ESU advanced to the NCAA Semifinals for the second time in program history and will face Queens on Friday.

Defensive Player of the Week

Eleanor Kast – Lindenwood University

Kast anchored the Lions defense in the NCAA first and second round wins this past weekend. The junior made seven saves in a 14-9 win over Regis last Friday, before registering 10 saves in a 17-13 takedown of top ranked UIndy. Kast added three ground balls and a caused turnover to Lindenwood’s defensive effort. They will face Roberts Wesleyan in an NCAA semi-final matchup on Friday.


Division III

Offensive Player of the Week

Emily Games – Tufts University

Games scored eight goals and added three assists to lead Tufts to a pair of NCAA Tournament victories over Roger Williams (15-6) and TCNJ (11-10) last weekend. The senior attacker became the Jumbo program’s all-time leader in goals scored (185) as well. Games added a ground ball and caused turnover to her stat line, as Tufts returned to the NCAA Final Four. The #3 Jumbos will face St. John Fisher on Saturday in the semifinal round.

Defensive Player of the Week

Mary Claire Hisle – Salisbury University

Hisle recorded 16 saves on 21 shots picked up six ground balls, and caused four turnovers, as Salisbury defeated Washington & Jefferson (17-3) and Ithaca (16-5) in NCAA tournament play last weekend. Against Washington & Jefferson, the junior goalkeeper held the Presidents scoreless in the first half by making three saves on the three shots she faced. In Saturday's regional final against #11 Ithaca, Hisle recorded 13 saves (11 in the second half) to preserve the win. The Gulls to advance to the program's 12th Final Four and will face #8 Denison on Saturday.
