IWLCA Players of the Week – May 11, 2021

 

The IWLCA has chosen six NCAA student-athletes for the IWLCA Player of the Week awards for the week of May 3 – May 9, 2021. This weekly award recognizes the best offensive and defensive performances by players in Division I, II, and III each week during the regular season.

Division I

Offensive Player of the Week

Ally Kennedy – Stony Brook University

Kennedy set the America East tournament single-game (7) and championship tournament (12) records for goals this past weekend, as the Seawolves claimed their eighth straight conference title. Kennedy, a graduate student, added an assist, 10 draw controls, 10 ground balls, and three caused turnovers in wins against UMBC (25-13) and Albany (16-9). The midfielder was named the America East Championship Most Outstanding Player and will lead Stony Brook into the NCAA Tournament as the #8 seed, where they face Towson on Friday in the first round.

Defensive Player of the Week

Molly Dougherty – James Madison University

Dougherty was named the Colonial Athletic Association Championship’s Most Outstanding Performer after going 2-0 in in the Dukes’ wins over Hofstra (14-7) and Drexel (13-12 in OT). The redshirt junior recorded 29 saves with a .604 save percentage and a 9.5 GAA and chipped in with four ground balls. She recorded a season-high 16 saves in the overtime win against Drexel. James Madison will face Johns Hopkins in NCAA first-round play on Friday.


Division II

Offensive Player of the Week

Hailey Daleo – Florida Southern College

Daleo racked up 13 points last week in wins over Florida Tech (19-6) and #8 Tampa (19-4) . The sophomore attacker scored seven goals and added an assist against Florida Tech and potted five goals against Tampa. She also provided the Mocs with nine draw controls, a ground ball, and a caused turnover. Florida Southern finished the season at 9-1 and ranked #7 in the Division II Coaches Poll.

Defensive Player of the Week

Jessica Berg – Regis University

Berg was selected to the RMAC All-Tournament team after leading the Rangers’ defensive effort as they captured their second straight conference title. In wins over Fort Lewis (20-7) and Colorado Mesa (15-6), the midfielder corralled 15 draw controls, caused 10 turnovers, scooped up six ground balls and added five goals. Regis, ranked tenth in the last regular season Division II Coaches Poll, will face #2 Lindenwood on Friday in the first-round of the NCAA tournament.


Division III

Offensive Player of the Week

Hannah Lorenzen – SUNY Cortland

Lorenzen helped lead the Red Dragons to NCAA tournament victories over Transylvania (18-5) and Rhodes (23-12) last weekend. The senior midfielder tallied 13 goals, two assists, nine draw controls, a caused turnover and a ground ball, as Cortland advanced to the third round to face Messiah on Saturday. Lorenzen’s 10-goal performance against Rhodes set a new record for goals in an NCAA tournament game at Cortland, and also included her 100th career goal.

Defensive Player of the Week

Mekayla Montgomery – William Smith College

Montgomery and the Heron defense limited its opponents to just eight goals in a pair of NCAA tournament games this past weekend. In the 19-3 win over Meredith, she won three draw controls, picked up seven ground balls, and caused two turnovers. The next day, the senior defender had five ground balls and two caused turnovers to help William Smith knock off #1 Franklin & Marshall. Next up for the Herons is a third-round clash with St. John Fisher on Friday.
