IWLCA Players of the Week – April 6, 2021

 

The IWLCA has chosen six NCAA student-athletes for the IWLCA Player of the Week awards for the week of March 29 – April 4, 2021. This weekly award recognizes the best offensive and defensive performances by players in Division I, II, and III each week during the regular season.

Division I

Offensive Player of the Week

Jamie Ortega – University of North Carolina

Ortega led Carolina to a 17-6 win over then second-ranked Syracuse on Saturday. The senior attacker scored a season-high eight points on five goals and three assists, and also posted two ground balls and a caused turnover. Ortega scored four goals in a key, 9-0 run to close the first half, turning a 4-1 Syracuse lead into a 10-4 UNC halftime advantage. The #1 Tar Heels are now 11-0 on the season.

Defensive Player of the Week

Taylor Moreno – University of North Carolina

Moreno held then #2 Syracuse scoreless for nearly 29 consecutive minutes during Carolina’s 17-6 victory. The senior netminder helped the Heels turn a 4-1, first-half deficit into an 11-4 lead with 21:21 left in the game. After the Orange cut the lead to 12-6 with 18:36 to play, Moreno held Syracuse scoreless the rest of the game. Moreno’s 11 saves are a season high, and her 16th career game with 10 or more.


Division II

Offensive Player of the Week

Erin McMullen – Le Moyne College

McMullen tallied 10 points (8g, 2a), recorded 15 draw controls, seven ground balls, and three caused turnovers in a 2-0 week. Against #18 Pace, she recorded three goals, one assist, four draw controls, one caused turnover, and totaled a career high-tying five ground balls during a 17-6 win. The senior attacker added six points, picked up two ground balls and two caused turnovers, and hauled in a career-high 11 draw controls in a 14-8 victory over American International.

Defensive Player of the Week

Bailey Grant – Stonehill College

Grant posted a season-high 14 saves to lead the Skyhawks to a 10-9 win over then #15 Assumption in their lone game of the week. The fifth-year goalkeeper also chipped in with a season and team-high seven ground balls in the game. Grant made ten of her 14 stops in the first half to keep Stonehill within one at the break. This was the 18th double-figure save performance of her career.


Division III

Co-Offensive Player of the Week

Catherine Lawliss – Tufts University

Lawliss scored five goals and added four assists in Tufts' 17-5 opening win at Connecticut College. The senior attacker scored the first goal of the game and had three goals with three assists in the first half as #3 Tufts built an 11-3 lead. She then scored two of Tufts' first three goals in the second half as the Jumbos locked down the win.

Co-Offensive Player of the Week

Maddy Olsen – Husson University

Olsen recorded her eighth goal of the day on a free position attempt against UMaine-Farmington to become the first player in program history to record 11 points in a single game. The Eagles won the game 19-14, led by Olsen’s eight goals and three assists. The senior midfielder also added eight draw controls, four ground balls, and two caused turnovers on the day.

Defensive Player of the Week

Allyn Lilien – Montclair State University

Lilien came up with a career-best 25 saves in a 10-9 win over then #11 TCNJ, vaulting the Red Hawks into the national rankings, as they land at #23 in this week’s Division III Coaches Poll. The senior goalkeeper stopped 11 shots in the first half and added 14 more saves in the second, including four key stops in the final six minutes to preserve the victory. Montclair State is now 2-0, and Lilien sports a .683 save percentage on the season.
