IWLCA Players of the Week – March 23, 2021

 

The IWLCA has chosen six NCAA student-athletes for the IWLCA Player of the Week awards for the week of March 15 – March 21, 2021. This weekly award recognizes the best offensive and defensive performances by players in Division I, II, and III each week during the regular season.

Division I

Offensive Player of the Week

Molly Garrett – University of Michigan

Garrett, a graduate student, scored nine goals and added two assists in two games against then #7 Penn State last weekend. The midfielder also added two draw controls, six ground balls, and one caused turnover to the stat sheet as the #12 Wolverines split the series. Garrett’s seven-goal performance in game two ranks second all-time in a single game in Michigan women's lacrosse history.

Defensive Player of the Week

Lizzie Colson – University of Maryland

Colson filled up the stat sheet last weekend and led the Maryland defense which held Ohio State to only 14 goals in two wins. The redshirt senior collected nine ground balls, 16 draw controls and six caused turnovers, while also assisting on a goal for the #7 Terps. Her five ground balls, and four caused turnovers in the first game, a 14-9 victory, were both career-highs. Colson now leads the nation in caused turnovers, with 3.0 per game.


Division II

Offensive Player of the Week

Emily Eller – Colorado State University Pueblo

Eller totaled 11 goals, 14 draw controls, seven ground balls and seven caused turnovers in the Pack’s two games last week. In an 18-16 win against Missouri Western, the senior attacker scored five goals with three coming on free position shots and she totaled nine draw controls. In a 13-11 loss to Fort Lewis, Eller netted six goals to tie a career-high and added five draw controls. Eller's 21 goals this season leads the RMAC, while her 5.25 goals per game is good for eighth in Division II.

Defensive Player of the Week

Grace Young – Saint Anselm College

Young notched 15 saves, three ground balls, and three caused turnovers in the opening week for the Hawks. Saint Anselm beat Southern New Hampshire University, 19-5, and American International College, 12-4, and is currently ranked at #18 in the IWLCA Division II Coaches Poll. The junior goalkeeper sits atop the NE10 rankings for goals-against average (4.50) and ranks second in the NE10 for save percentage (62.5).


Division III

Offensive Player of the Week

Alexis Strobel – Salisbury University

Strobel led the Sea Gull offense with a total of 15 points in two games last week. Salisbury is ranked fourth and is now 6-0 on the season after beating then #16 Mary Washington, 13-7, and #10 TCNJ, 14-8 last week. Strobel dished out a season-high eight assists and recorded a season-high 10 points against TCNJ.

Defensive Player of the Week

Charlotte Godfrey – Denison University

Godfrey led the Denison defense against Wooster with five caused turnovers, seven ground balls and 10 draw controls. Denison defeated the Fighting Scots, 22-9 to improve to 2-0 on the season and is ranked #14 in the IWLCA Division III Coaches Poll.
