IWLCA Players of the Week – March 16, 2021

The IWLCA has chosen six NCAA student-athletes for the IWLCA Player of the Week awards for the week of March 8 – March 14, 2021. This weekly award recognizes the best offensive and defensive performances by players in Division I, II, and III each week during the regular season.

Division I

Co-Offensive Player of the Week

Charlotte North – Boston College

North scored seven goals on seven shots and added two assists for nine points in a 20-11 win over then #8 Virginia last Saturday. The senior attacker also added one caused turnover and 11 draw controls to lead the Eagles to victory. Boston College is now 4-1 and moved up to sixth in this week’s IWLCA Division I Coaches Poll.

Co-Offensive Player of the Week

Alyssa Parrella – Hofstra University

It was a record-breaking week for Parrella as her Saturday outing against Villanova was one of the best single-game performances in history. The senior attacker scored 10 goals in a 12-9 win, while also adding one ground ball, one caused turnover, and four draw controls. This was a career-high for Parrella, a single-game record for Hofstra, and she is only the fifth player in the last 10 years to have 10 or more goals in a game; her 10 goals are the fourth-most in a single game in NCAA history. Earlier in the week, she added two goals, an assist, and one ground ball in a 7-18 loss to Albany. The Pride are now 3-1 on the season.

Defensive Player of the Week

Molly Brock – Jacksonville University

Brock lit up the stat sheet in the Dolphins 12-11 win over then #5 Florida. The junior midfielder registered two goals, five ground balls, and tied a program single-game record with 13 draw controls, which is also a new career-best mark. Jacksonville is now 3-0 on the season and was ranked #22 in this week’s IWLCA Division I Coaches Poll.

Division II

Offensive Player of the Week

Molly Bursinger – Grand Valley State University

Bursinger scored a season-high five goals in both of the Lakers’ games last week, an 18-4 win over Findlay, and a 14-8 win against Indiana (PA). The sophomore middie added an assist, 15 draw controls, six ground balls, and four caused turnovers last week, as GVSU (3-0) moved up to #10 in the week’s IWLCA Division II Coaches Poll.

Defensive Player of the Week

Megan Biase – Wingate University

Biase piled up 11 saves, four ground balls and three caused turnovers at #6 Queens to start her week. The sophomore goalkeeper then led the Bulldogs (4-2) to the first shutout in program history Saturday, collecting a pair of saves and a ground ball in a 22-0 win against Coker.

Division III

Offensive Player of the Week

Kelsey Winters – Christopher Newport University

Winters led the Captains with 16 points in two games last week, including an 11-point showcase in the 23-1 win against Virginia Wesleyan. During that contest, she posted six assists and a career-high five goals while becoming just the fourth player in program history to register at least five goals and five helpers in a single game. On Saturday, Winters came back with a five-point effort in a 12-16 loss to #4 Washington & Lee. The sophomore attacker’s four assists against the Generals marked the most by a Captain against a top-five opponent in school history.

Defensive Player of the Week

Kaleigh Kotula – John Carroll University

Kotula played a crucial role in both of the Blue Streaks’ wins against undefeated opponents last week. The senior netminder posted nine saves against Mount Union in a 19-13 win, and a career-high 14 saves in the 17-11 victory over Capital. Kotula also added four ground balls and a caused turnover on the week to help her team improve to 6-0 on the season.
