The IWLCA has announced it will host Future Leaders of the Game: IWLCA Students of Color Coaching Symposium on January 4-5, 2021. Attendees will participate in a series of online seminars focusing on coaching lacrosse and preparing for a career in athletics. Eligibility will be limited to current juniors, seniors, and graduate students at 2020-21 IWLCA member institutions, as well as graduates from the past two calendar years (2019 and 2020 graduates).

“The coaching symposium will allow us to have an immediate impact on the pool of candidates entering our profession each year,” said Liz Grote, President of the IWLCA and head coach at Bowdoin College. “In order to make our sport more accessible to people of color, we need to be more inclusive and remove barriers to entry; the symposium will provide participants with the training and connections they need to enter the coaching ranks and give them the network of support they need to succeed.”

Future Leaders of the Game: IWLCA Students of Color Coaching Symposium will be facilitated by a diverse group of coaches and administrators to expose lacrosse student-athletes of color to the profession of coaching and provide them with the tools, mentors, and career advancement connections to diversify the pool of coaches in our sport. The planning for the symposium is a joint effort between the IWLCA’s Racial Equity Task Force and several IWLCA committees and staff members, and its execution will be managed by Paige Messersmith, head coach at Ohio Wesleyan University.
