The IWLCA’s Annual Meeting Planning Committee (AMPC) has announced that Betsy Butterick and Tomika Ferguson will deliver presentations to the membership during the 2020 IWLCA Convention. The three-day event will take place December 8-10 and consist of business meetings, divisional breakouts, professional development, partner presentations, and the IWLCA Coaches Clinic powered by Just Play.

Butterick will present "Quality Conversations: 10 Ways to Create Stronger Connection," on Tuesday, which will focus on tools coaches can use to build relationships based on meaningful conversations. Ferguson’s presentation, “Keep Up the Momentum: Remain Committed to IDEA-Based Coaching,” is scheduled for Wednesday, and will center on helping coaches employ IDEA-based (inclusive, diverse, equitable, and antiracist) leadership practices.

“Both Betsy Butterick and Tomika Ferguson are experts in their field, and we are very excited to provide our membership the opportunity to learn from them,” said Megan Smith, co-chair of the AMPC. “Offering professional development sessions that provide our coaches with immediate actionable takeaways they can apply to their own teams helps them not only grow professionally, but also empowers them to inspire and educate the next generation of women in sport on their own campuses.”

As a former coach with experience in NCAA Division I, II, III, and the WNBA, Betsy Butterick utilizes her unique background with individuals ready to improve and teams of all kinds – from the locker room to the boardroom. As a Communication Specialist, Betsy helps teams improve communication effectiveness while working collaboratively to create positive change. Betsy’s experience in workshop design and facilitation has led her to speak on many stages, including the Women’s Basketball Final Four and with the WBCA’s “30 Under 30” honorees, Dan Tudor’s National Collegiate Recruiting Conference, Ohio University’s Global Coaching Symposium, and at the Breakthrough Digital Leadership Summit for Women in Sports.

Ferguson is an assistant professor in the Department of Educational Leadership in the School of Education at Virginia Commonwealth University and is currently serving as the Interim Assistant Dean, Student Affairs & Inclusive Excellence. Previously, Dr. Ferguson served as the director of noncredit programs and community partnerships in outreach & engagement and an instructor for the College of Education at James Madison University. Dr. Ferguson’s research centers on the college experiences of women of color student-athletes, in particular she works with and examines the experiences of black female student-athletes through her Black Athlete Sister Circle (BASC) program. Additionally, her work explores issues of affordability and retention for low-income and students of color, and the professional development of K-12 and nonprofit leaders around issues of equity and diversity.
