The IWLCA’s 2020 tournaments were cancelled at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic due to ongoing health and safety concerns, along with the financial uncertainty faced by coaches, players and their families, and club teams. The IWLCA and Elite have utilized the past few months to listen to the IWLCA membership and club constituents to integrate a number of thoughtful changes into the relaunched events. New regional events will be offered to lessen the financial burden of families and coaches, and the utilization of the GotSport registration platforms will be used to help club operators navigate a more efficient process. The IWLCA Capital Cup has also changed its traditional dates to highlight and support the championship weekend of 2021 World Lacrosse Women’s World Cup, which will be hosted by US Lacrosse at Towson University from July 7-17, 2021.
“It was really important for us to reflect over the past few years of our IWLCA events to see what went well and what could be better,” noted IWLCA Executive Director Liz Robertshaw. “Lacrosse coaches and families are vocal and let you know what they want, so we listened and have made changes that we feel will provide for an exceptional experience. The IWLCA began these events to help make the recruiting process more thorough and efficient for our college coaches and create exposure for players interested in competing at the next level. We believe the additional regional tournaments, in non-saturated areas across the country, will be a great step towards achieving our goal to continue growing the game.”
Another exciting change in the event schedule is the return of an IWLCA event to the Maryland SoccerPlex in Germantown, MD. This premier sports complex will play host to the IWLCA Champions Cup in June and was an essential piece of the scheduling puzzle. “The IWLCA Recruiting Series is an unmatched lacrosse experience for female student-athletes to be seen and recruited by college coaches,” said Elite Tournament’s newly appointed Director of Lacrosse and Sponsorship Sales, Ryan Heacock, who spearheaded the 2021 scheduling efforts. “Elite Tournaments is focused on providing the best experience for everyone involved in our events. We’re excited to renew sponsors that have supported the tournament series previously and will also be announcing exciting new partners over the next year in order to ensure the IWLCA events remain the industry leaders.”
More information about the IWLCA Tournament Series will be released in the coming weeks and can be found on the tournament website www.IWLCArecruiting.com as well as on Instagram & Twitter - @IWLCArecruiting.
