New Division I Legislation Information

NCAA 2017-1 Q&A

The Q&A document to the right addresses some frequently asked questions regarding the new lacrosse recruiting legislation (September 1 of junior year as the initial date for ALL recruiting contact).

Camps and Clinics Loophole Closed

Effective TODAY, June 12, recruiting conversations at camps or clinics before September 1 of a prospective student-athlete's junior year are not permissible. This is "modification of wording" to the NCAA lacrosse early recruiting legislation passed on April 14, 2017. This modification was just approved by the Division I Council on Friday, June 9, 2017.

What this means: no recruiting contact with a lacrosse PSA or his/her family anywhere, by any means, before September 1 of junior year.

This is a "bright line rule" intended to set a clear point in time when recruiting contact may begin in lacrosse.

Success!

Thank you to everyone who worked tirelessly on this issue over the past three years! The early recruiting proposal was adopted by the NCAA Division I Council on April 14 and became effective immediately. We have also confirmed the following information with the NCAA:

  • Club and high school coaches may NOT be used to circumvent recruiting contact rules.
  • Direct messaging to PSAs through these third parties is NOT permissible.
  • Communication about verbal offers through these third parties is NOT permissible.

As more information becomes available, including official NCAA interpretations, we will share that information with the lacrosse community.

Effective Immediately

We have received confirmation via email from the NCAA that the Division I lacrosse early recruiting proposal became EFFECTIVE FRIDAY, APRIL 14. An official interpretation should be forthcoming.

This means that all recruiting contact begins September 1 of a prospective student-athlete's junior year. Any recruiting contact with younger PSAs is impermissible under the new rule.

This is different than most of the measures passed by the NCAA Division I Council that will become final at the close of the NCAA Board of Governors meeting on April 26.

Some details to note in the new lacrosse-specific legislation:

  • "Effective Date: Immediate"
  • "Status: Adopted Final"
  • It was recommended as "noncontroversial" which has been interpreted to mean that it does NOT have to wait until April 26th to become final, as it states for other Council measures in the DI Council Governance Notice.
  • The title of the proposal has changed from "2016-26" to "2017-1"
