The IWLCA STX Capital Cup Tournament kicked off on Thursday in Virginia, with games taking place at the River City Sports Complex and the Clover Hill Athletic Complex. Over 5,000 athletes competing in the 2018, 2019, 2020, and Open divisions will participate in the four day event that concludes Sunday. New this year is the addition of the Summer Debut, which took place on Thursday and Friday and featured players from the class of 2021 competing in their first IWLCA event.

“Capital Cup is a great tournament. The facilities are great and the Corrigan staff is really efficient and they make sure that everyone has a great experience," Megan Smith, assistant coach at Chowan University, said. "It makes it really easy to do my job, which is to evaluate all of the great talent on the field without having to worry about the logistics. It really is a first-class event.”

Over 500 coaches from more than 250 NCAA Division I, II, III, and NAIA institutions attended the event to evaluate prospective student-athletes. Celine Cunningham, head coach at Stevens Institute of Technology, explained "Capital Cup is a great way to end our summer recruiting schedule. Even though it's hot and humid, you can really see the grit in some of players when they battle in this weather. I love to see the teams from the West Coast and Midwest, and appreciate the level of talent in all age groups."

Sports psychologist Greg Dale presented a workshop geared towards student-athletes and their parents during the tournament. His talk, "Athletes Today: Strategies to Help Them Have a Successful Sport Experience," was repeated four times and was well received by attendees. Dale covered topics of interest to both parents and athletes, including the significance of the coach-athlete-parent triangle.

The IWLCA STX Capital Cup is the final summer event in the IWLCA Recruiting Tournament Series. The next tournament will be the Brine President's Cup presented by New Balance. It will be held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex and Lake Myrtle Sports Park from November 17-19, 2017 in Orlando, FL. The Fall Debut Tournament will be held in conjunction with the President's Cup on November 18-19, and will take place at Championsgate Sports Complex in Orlando.
