The 2016 IWLCA Annual Meetings, presented by Nike Lacrosse, began today at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort when IWLCA President Alicia Groveston addressed the membership. The first day was dominated by various reports of IWLCA activities throughout the past year, and guest speakers. One of the highlights of the opening session was the inaugural Kristina Quigley Scholarship presentation. Regis University head coach Sarah Kellner and her family were presented with the scholarship by Kristina Quigley's parents, Patti and Sobby Trionfo after the membership watched a tribute video.

“What an incredible first day of our 2016 IWLCA Annual Meeting! Not only were we able to fit in an extremely important business session, but we learned so much about our history and future direction of our sport and organization,” Groveston explained. “We were able to laugh and cry with the first Kristina Quigley Family Scholarship award recipient. It was an amazing start and I look forward to tomorrow.”

Groveston introduced this year’s Keynote Speaker Col. Arthur Athens, whose address focused on culture and what that looks like. Athens explained the importance for coaches to “set the standards, set the direction, and set the alignment. After a "sharing dinner" on the beach to foster collaboration and discussion among smaller groups of coaches, the group heard from former IWLCA President Feffie Barnhill. Her presentation touched upon the history of women's lacrosse, the evolution of the game, the history of the IWLCA, and the people who impacted the sport of women’s lacrosse and its coaching profession.

Steve Wagner, a member of the Board of Directors, said “Hearing about the history of women’s lacrosse was both humbling and fascinating. It is extremely important to connect the past to the present, and Feffie’s presentation bridged that gap for many of our coaches who may not have been aware of the roots of the game.”

US Lacrosse CEO Steve Stenersen concluded the evening session by highlighting the partnership between US Lacrosse and the IWLCA and explaining the impact that collaboration can have on the sport and is growth moving forward. The partnership between the two organizations was manifested physically earlier this fall when the IWLCA Building at US Lacrosse Headquarters was officially dedicated.
